A Message From The Vice-Chancellor

It is a great pleasure for me to introduce the new web-site of Jadavpur University. National Council of Education (NCE) was founded in 1906, during the nationalist movement from the need of a new system of education- with equal emphasis on humanities, science, engineering and technology as well as professional. The long list of council's founder members included great thinkers and leaders like Satish Chandra Mukherjee, Aurobindo Ghosh, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Gurudas Banerjee, Bipin Chandra Pal, Rashbehari Ghosh, Surendra Nath Banerjee and Chittaranjan Das. After the independence the Government of West Bengal, with the concurrence of the Government of India, enacted the necessary legislation to establish Jadavpur University on 24th December 1955 with three faculties of Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology.

At present the university is spread over two campuses- at Jadavpur and Salt Lake. The University now offers U.G and P.G courses in 12 disciplines in Arts, 6 in Science and 17 in Engineering and Technology. University also has a number of Schools and Centers providing postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral level research programme for 36 interdisciplinary and emerging disciplines.

The University has been accredited with a "Five Star" status by NAAC and identified by the University Grants Commission with "Potential for Excellence". A number of departments have been designated by the University grants commission as Center of Advanced Studies. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology has been selected as a Lead Institution under the World Bank Assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of Government of India. In 2003 the University has been identified as the 67th The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship fund (SYLFF) institute. In 2004 the university has won the Programme Development Award through international competition from the Tokyo Foundation. So, Jadavpur University is in the process of making its unique method of internationalization by making itself more visible to the international community. I hope that our new web-site will lead us one step forward to our goal.
